The 1st International Workshop on Eye-Tracking in Aviation (ETAVI) will be held at ISAE-SUPAERO in Toulouse — the centre of the European aerospace industry. ISAE-SUPAERO — Higher French Institute of Aeronautics and Space — was founded in 1909 and was the world's first aerospace engineering school. The aviation domain can benefit from the growth and maturation of eye-tracking technology to improve training programs, on-board and on-ground human-computer interaction, and flight data analysis. The 1st International Workshop on Eye-Tracking in Aviation (ETAVI) aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and industrial players who have common interests in applying eye-tracking research in the aviation domain including, but not limited to, the cockpit and air traffic control / management.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Eye Tracking for training:
- Tools for improving monitoring skills
- Tools for instructors/educators
- Standardized eye movement patterns
Eye Tracking for interaction:
- Gaze as an input modality in the cockpit and for traffic control
- Gaze-based interaction to support existing interactions
- Gaze-based interactions to introduce novel interactions
Eye Tracking for analysis:
- Eye movements in cockpit and air traffic control operations
- Evaluation and improvement of interfaces
- Expertise estimation and flight performance analysis
- Tools for comparison of pilots' and controllers' scanpaths
- Analyzing big eye tracking data from training sessions
- Cognitive pilots/controllers models based on gaze behavior
Eye Tracking challenges and extensions:
- On-board gaze recording challenges
- Extending physiological recordings with EEG, ECG, EDA, fNIRS

Submission process:

Authors are invited to submit work in progress, preliminary results, or position papers of 4-6 pages in length (plus 2 pages references). Please upload a 150-maximum word abstract reflecting your expected contribution by the due date. Your abstract submission will allow us to prepare for the review process. An abstract is required before the actual paper is submitted. To submit the abstract, login to https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=etavi20 and create an account if you do not already have one. Ensure that you have uploaded your abstract/paper by the appropriate due dates.
Please use ACM article template (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) with "acmconf" and "nonacm" template styles (first line of the .tex file: \documentclass[acmconf, nonacm]{acmart}). Add "review" style for the review process.
We use a two-phase review process with a rebuttal phase so that before the final decision, the authors will have the opportunity to respond to the reviews with a rebuttal. Manuscripts will be reviewed by the program committee. Papers may be accepted for oral or for a poster presentation. Online proceedings will be published as open access through the ETH Zurich Research Collection under a Creative Commons license. Each paper will be assigned a DOI. At least one author must register and present accepted work at the workshop.

Eye movements research in aviation from Fitts to nowadays

Leandro L. Di Stasi, Assistant Professor at University of Granada, Spain

Dr. Di Stasi earned his bachelor's and master's degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of Padua (Italy), and obtained his Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience from the University of Granada (Spain). During his postdoctoral studies at the Barrow Neurological Center (Phoenix, Arizona), he investigated the effects of fatigue in Cobra helicopter pilots in collaboration with the US Marine Corps (Camp Pendleton, California), and he worked on developing a method to detect early aviator hypoxia in collaboration with the Spanish Air Force (Spanish Defense Aero-medical Center, Madrid). After being awarded a Talentia Postdoc fellowship at the University of Granada in 2015 and a Rita Levi Montalcini fellowship (tenured-position) at the University of Padova in 2016, Dr. Di Stasi rejoined the University of Granada as a Ramón y Cajal fellow (tenured-position) in 2017 starting his own laboratory “Neuroergonomics & Operator Performance Lab”. The primary interest of the Lab focuses to improve operator performance in safety-critical systems, such as military operations and healthcare environments.

Given the latest recommendations of The French Government, we are constrained to take the protective measures and to suspend the ETAVI event planned on the 17th March 2020 at ISAE-SUPAERO. We are thrilled that the International Workshop on Eye-Tracking in Aviation gained much attention and allowed us to start building an international community of experts in gaze tracking for aerospace. It is important for us that this community stays healthy to continue improving flight safety and operations efficiency. We thank all the speakers, sponsors, and attendees for their enthusiasm, interest, and participation in this event. The ETAVI is postponed to a later date. Please, stay safe.
