About

The Summer School on Critical Embedded Systems aims at presenting state-of-the-art techniques, methodologies and tools for the engineering of critical embedded systems across its life-cycle, from early requirement elicitation up to certification. It is organized by the safety-Critical Embedded SystEms Chair – CESEC.

The Summer School will provide students with scientific and technical sessions on hot topics in this domain, but also practical sessions to consolidate new know-hows.

For its inaugural session, the Summer School will focus on a fertile multi-domain theme : engineering of drones, covering paths from system engineering down to electrical engineering, including architecture and control/command aspects.

Animated by practitioners from the industry and the academia, the School will cover the following topics :

UAVs : introduction to a family of systems for new mission and services
Operation of UAVs in shared sky, certification and safety issues
System Architecture : interfaces, dimensioning, sensors, actuators
Systems Engineering : from mission statements to requirement engineering ;
System Validation and Verification : performance, safety, qualification, etc.
Design and implementation : control laws, software and electronic design ;

Demonstration sessions indoor and outdoor will complete the summer school, turning concepts into live and exciting moments.

the safety-Critical Embedded SystEms Chair – CESEC created by the EADS Corporate Foundation.

CESEC Scholarship

The EADS Foundation Chair on Embedded Critical Systems (CESEC) offers scholarships for masters degrees to French and oversea students for the academic year 2015-2016. This is a call for applications to this scholarship. The masters degrees are offered by the following engineering schools in Toulouse : ISAE, INSA de Toulouse and INP-ENSEEIHT.
The masters programs supported are in the field of Embedded Critical Systems. These are the following programs :

Candidates are selected jointly by EADS Foundation, industrial partners and the three engineering schools (ISAE, INSA and INP-ENSEEIHT). For the 2015/2016 academic year, 4 scholarships will be awarded :

2 for the Advanced Master on Embedded Systems (EMS),
1 for the Master of Science AESS option Embedded Systems,
1 for the Master of Science ESECA option Integrated Circuits Design for Embedded Systems.

Eligibility requirements

Only candidates that have applied (or are already admitted or registered) to one the above master's program (EMS, AESS, ESECA) can apply for the scholarship (see "Selection Criteria and Procedures" below).
There are no particular requirements for nationality, only the ones required by the masters programs.
Candidates cannot benefit simultaneously (at a same academic year) from the CESEC scholarship in addition to another scholarship (e.g. from French government or from another company).
Candidates must have no links with a private enterprise upon their arrival in France.
Candidates must follow the full master program (1 year for Advanced Master EMS and 2 years for the Master of Science AESS and ESECA).
Successful CESEC candidates are required to complete the selected program in Critical Embedded Systems (EMS, AESS, ESECA) at one of the partner engineering school entirely or mainly in France.

Remark : The candidates of Masters of Science program starting in M1 level must follow in M2 the major in the field of Critical Embedded Systems, otherwise the candidate looses his/her scholarship and must pay for the previous months received.

Selection Criteria and Procedures

The final selection of CESEC beneficiaries is made in France by a selection committee composed of representatives from the partners (school engineering, industries and EADS Fondation).
The following criteria are taken into account for the final selection :
Excellence of the candidate, as reflected by his/her prior university experience,
the candidate's career goals,
admission on one of the three masters programs in Critical Embedded Systems (EMS, AESS, ESECA) at a partner school above (ISAE, INSA and INP-ENSEEIHT).

Each partner master program proposes a classification of their selected students candidates to the CESEC scholarship. The selection committee draws up a final list of the candidates chosen. Students are then required to ensure that they have been formally enrolled at one of the masters programs in Critical Embedded Systems (EMS, AESS, ESECA) at a CESEC partner school (ISAE, INSA and INP-ENSEEIHT).

The selection committee's proceedings are not made public, its decisions are final and no reasons shall be given for the decisions made.

Selection Timetable

The following dates have been set for the 2015-2016 academic year :

Deadline for the online CESEC application and partner Master AESS and ESECA application : January, 11th 2015
Deadline for Advanced Master on Embedded Systems (EMS) : February, 17th 2015
Individual notification : March, 14th, 2015

CESEC Scholarship Package

The CESEC scholarship covers :
full tuition fees and
part of living expenses :

Advanced Master on Embedded Systems, 3,500 € for the 1 year-master program,
Master of Science AESS, option Embedded Systems : 7,000 € for the 2 years-master program,
Master of Science ESECA, option Integrated Circuits Design for Embedded Systems : 7,000 € for the 2 years-master program.

Beneficiaries of the CESEC scholarship receive personalized support from a CESEC mentor, along with advice and help in finding internships and exploring cultural activities.
CESEC beneficiaries may also be eligible for accommodation support.

Students must arrive in Toulouse in the beginning of the academic year in which the scholarship is obtained. If they are not able to start the Master program, students must be aware that the scholarship is lost, and they need to apply again for the following calendar year.

Application for the CESEC scholarship

Candidates must :
apply for the CESEC partner program (EMS, AESS or ESECA)
indicate in the application for the CESEC partner program that he/she applies for the CESEC scholarship.

For AESS program, before Jan, 11th 2015 using the online application form.

For ESECA program, before Jan, 11th 2015 using the online application form.

For EMS program, before Feb, 17th 2015 using the online application form for ISAE inscriptions or N7 inscriptions

Applicants must include the following with their online application form :
a curriculum vitae in English (maximum of 2 pages),
a statement of your career plans in the field of Critical Embedded Systems,

No proof of application (or admission) is necessary. The selection committee will contact directly the CESEC partner program chosen by the candidate (EMS, AESS, ESECA) to check that the application (or admission) has been confirmed.

Publication of Successful Applications
The candidate will be notified by electronic mail and mail.

The safety-Critical Embedded SystEms Chair (CESEC) is an education chair created by the EADS Corporate Foundation on January 2013. It is implemented within three engineering schools in Toulouse : ISAE, INSA and INP-ENSEEIHT. It aims at strengthening the "system" dimension in existing syllabus related to safety-critical embedded systems and at attracting students in this domain.
This chair aims at developing a new engineering education pedagogy in critical embedded systems, through :
a portfolio of projects proposed to students in collaboration with the aerospace and automotive industry. Together with this portfolio, teaching programs will be enriched to define and strengthen the “system” dimension ;
an international summer school, addressing students, young engineers and professionals in the industry ;
scholarships to attract the best students in the field of safety-critical embedded systems.

Portfolio of projets

An important goal of CESEC is to motivate cross-curriculum and cross-institution collaboration, supported by industrial concrete cases. This is done through a portfolio of projects proposed to the students both in initial training and continual education.
This portfolio operates on an innovative education initiative to allow involved students working to have at the same time a global vision (associating project management and system approach) and a more focused vision in their domain of training (e.g. computer science, electronic, control). The experience in the management, the coordination and the multidisciplinary aspects of this portfolio is a key to the learning experience.

A workspace in the form of wiki was created by the projects' advisors (industry and academic of the three schools of the chair). The acquired experience in the management of the coordination and the interdisciplinary of this portfolio will be set up in a Methodological Guide aimed at all the institutions of higher education of the domain of embedded systems.
