Weather : 5-10 knts of wind most of the time (closed haul), up to 25 at the end
Autonomy, decision : total expect a rerouting at 54 milles (approx, not clear on the logs)

Communication : small range high frequency (10 sec) bidirectional HF + Iridium bidirectional low frequency (15 min)
Cause of the failure : battery low, failure mode was not tested, sail actuator get mad and eventually twisted a wire
Sept 2010 : "Pinta atlantic crossing attempt" (Aberystwyth univ)

Expected : 4000 milles (full Microtransat attempt)

22-23 juin : record de distance pour Iboat II

Du 21 au 23 juin le robot Iboat II a battu le record de distance : 108km ainsi que de durée (50 heures) en mer pour un robot voilier.

La trace GPS du voilier (fichier kml a ouvrir avec Google Earth).

Microtransat challenge

The final goal of the MICROTRANSAT challenge is to sail across the Atlantic ocean with a fully autonomous sailing boat. The boat are supposed to be small (less than 4m), fully autonomous and unmanned (no other energy than sun and wind) and cheap (it is supposed to be developed in an academic context, as a support for research and/or teaching)

Microtransat is not only a competition, we aim to demonstrate the ability of a small unmanned sailing robot to perform long term operation in high seas. Such sailing robot will be able to perform observation and surveyance tasks, wildlife and ocean monitoriung, etc...

Our goal at ISAE is to have this project animated by students as well as professors and technicians.

Objectif Microtransat

Est-il possible de faire traverser l'atlantique à un petit voilier entièrement autonome ? Le challenge MICROTRANSAT a pour but de mettre en compétition des voiliers avec cet objectif en ligne de mire. Le bateau doit être petit (moins de 4m), entièrement autonome (pas d'autre source d'énergie que le vent et le soleil) et peu cher (il doit être développé dans un contexte académique, comme support pour la recherche et/ou l'éducation)

Au delà de la simple compétition notre but est de démontrer qu'il est possible de rester en haute mer pour des missions de très longues durées. Les applications possibles seront nombreuses : observation des océans, de la vie marine, surveillance et contrôle, etc…

Le but à l'ISAE est de faire vivre Microtransat dans le cadre de projets d'étudiants et de stages. L'équipe technique (professeurs, techniciens) est aussi impliquée dans le projet.

Algorithmes de pilotage

Les lois de pilotage bas niveau du prototype sont testées en simulation puis embarquées après validation dans le robot. Toute la simulation est réalisée en Matlab/Simulink. Les lois de pilotage sont écrite en C dans une S-fonction de Matlab/Simulink. Lors du portage dans le calculateur embarqué ce même code est simplement copié-collé et compilé spécifiquement pour la cible.

Les images suivantes racontent les tribulations de Iboat I. Il a tiré ses premiers bords en 2006 sur le lac de Sesquière près de Toulouse. Les essais ont ensuite eu lieu sur le plan d'eau de Saint Nicolas de la Grave puis à Gruissan.
Il a participé au premier challenge Microtransat (Saint Nicolas de La Grave) au second (Aberystwyth, Pays de Galles) puis au quatrième (Porto) avant de prendre une retraite bien méritée en septembre (...)

Iboat since 2003

The project started in 2003 when Yves Briere (professor at ENSICA, now ISAE) and François Bastianelli (professor at IUT de Nantes) merged two students project in order to try to "robotized" an RC sailing boat. IUT de Nantes was in charge of the boat itself and ENSICA did the actuator and sensors integration.

Our prototype performed its first runs in 2005. Since then the robot has sailed has been modified and improved test after test.

In 2009 it it gives full demonstration of capability and autonomy. More than fifty students were involved since the beginning in the project.

A community of researchers and students is now working in sailing robotics. We meet each year for a friendly competition and scientific exchanges.

In June 2006, the first "défi Microtransat" was held in Toulouse (France). Three teams were coming from Austria, Wales and France.

In September 2007 the second meetingwas held at Aberystwyth with the same three teams plus a Canadian one.

There was 4 teams in Austria for the third competition in May 2008..

And in September 2009, there was 7 boats for 6 teams coming from 5 countries.

In September 2009 a transatlantic racewas supposed to start from Ireland but was postponed because of the lack of participant. Hopefully a real start will be organized in September 2010.

End of June 2011 will see the 100 milles Challenge takes place. The objective is to do a 100 milles navigation on the Mediterranean sea with Iboat II. This event will allow us to test our prototype in conditions representatives of the future transatlantic (salinity, waves, autonomy, satellite communication,...).
